When I went to Dr. Char, I was skeptical of whatever help I could gain from a chiropractor.  I thought it was hippy medicine of the sort that is more psychological than effective. But I was also in distress. My hips felt like knives, my lower back felt broken, and I was exhausted from insomnia. After my first adjustment, I went home and slept the entire night. The next day, I got out of bed without the pep talk and pain that had become my morning coffee. I couldn’t believe it. I continued getting my adjustments, and the results expanded. My hips were more comfortable, my entire body was less achy, and I truly came to look forward to the time I spent with Dr. Char.

Even after my son was born, I continued to use chiropractic care for my entire family, including the newborn. Dr. Char’s adjustments helped his latch improve and reduced the pain and frustration of breastfeeding.

I’m a skeptic turned believer simply because of how my body responded.

Did you know that pregnancy symptoms, although common, are not normal?

From the time of conception, women undergo physical, chemical, and emotional changes that allow them to create and provide for new life without any assistance from the outside world. The body is so intelligent that it does this on its own. But during these nine months, as their babies grow, pregnant women experience changes within their bodies that can be overwhelmingly strenuous to their bones, muscles, and joints.

Through chiropractic, we are directly addressing the system that controls EVERYTHING in your body – your nervous system. In order to keep any machine fully functioning, the central control system must effectively and efficiently communicate with all parts. The human body is no different.

Chiropractors are dedicated to listening to the symptoms and knowing where the body is misaligned. We make sure that there are no interferences within your spine.  This decreases pain and dysfunction and increases the body’s natural ability to thrive.  That’s why chiropractic adjustments are needed for everyone, including pregnant women.

During pregnancy, regular chiropractic adjustments can help a woman to be healthier and have a better childbirth experience.  Here’s how.

During pregnancy, regular chiropractic adjustments can help a woman to be healthier and have a better childbirth experience.  Here’s how.

4 Reasons to Receive Chiropractic Care During Pregnancy:

  1. The Adjustment of Skeletal System Shifts Due to Relaxin

Relaxin is a major hormone hero and villain in pregnancy. Relaxin is a normal hormone present in the bodies of men and women, pregnant or not. It’s an important hormone that helps you get pregnant by facilitating implantation. It allows the pregnant body to relax enough to accommodate the increased volume of blood flowing through the vessels. Most importantly and uncomfortably, relaxin relaxes muscles and ligaments to allow the pregnant body to share quarters with a growing baby. This hormone is so important and essential and also very responsible for the common back and pelvic pains many moms experience. What happens when the soft tissues surrounding the skeletal system get relaxed? The skeletal system shifts in necessary but often uncomfortable ways. That’s where I come in, ready to support my sisters.  I realign the bones that have shifted and need adjusting.

  2. Back and Hip Pain Relief

The weight of a pregnant woman’s expanding belly alters their postures, and their spine curves in an uncomfortable way.  This is especially true if they previously had spinal imbalances due to car accidents, other physical traumas, or bad posture.  This can increase symptoms that can sometimes be unbearable. Regular chiropractic adjustments from an ICPA trained chiropractor can help a mama’s body to adapt to this added weight with ease, by helping her body to maintain balance and structure.

  3. Better Fetal Positioning of Baby

Did you know that your uterus is attached directly to your pelvis? This relationship is like a hot air balloon, where the uterus is the balloon and the pelvis is the basket. So, this means that if you have misalignments of your lower spine and hips, then the uterus has no choice but to follow suit and become misaligned as well. If the uterus is not in the correct position, then your baby is not able to get into the correct position, which is head down, facing the back of you.Chiropractic care helps to decrease intrauterine constraints and allows baby to assume the position easily without pressure being forced onto his or her little body. When this occurs, women can now have more efficient labors, which could mean shorter labor times, decreased labor pain, or a combination of both, thus allowing mama to have the ability to manage through the birthing process without suffering.

  4. A Better Labor and Birth Experience

Let’s face it, labor is not called labor for nothing. It’s called labor because women work really hard to get our little beings here as safely as possible. Of course women are already strong, but when we have increased pressure on our spines and nervous systems, we can cause our labor experiences to be harder, thus requiring us to be even stronger than we already have to be.

If mama’s spine and pelvis have proper alignment and all of the nerves to the muscles, ligaments, and organs of her body are free and healthy, then her labor, birth, and postpartum experience can be more comfortable and healthy too.

Since babies are doing 50% of the work, babies can move throughout the pelvis with ease. This helps labor to be a smoother process.

Giving birth can be one of the most beautiful events that a woman will ever experience. Through chiropractic education and care, women can become more informed and empowered to have the perinatal experiences that they deserve.

Women are strong, competent, and capable of birthing without fear and without insurmountable pain.

  • 5 Things Impacting Your Libido

Courtesy of pexels.com A couple’s sex life is one of the most important aspects to a healthy successful relationship. The act blends the mind and the body — the physical and the emotional — into one. It brings people, especially those in a relationship built off of trust and love,  closer together.  Since sex plays such an essential role in love and marriage, the downs of sexual desire can be daunting. When the once highly anticipated act in a relationship becomes more of a responsibility, it can put a damper on the overall experience. However, it’s important to know that having a low sex drive at any given point is not abnormal.  “A low sex drive is basically you do not have as much interest in sex as you may have once had, … so a low sex drive is relative to you and your experience,” says Dr. Donna Oriowo, a sex and relationship therapist. “There's always going to be ebbs and flows in the ways that we experience our sexual desire and our libido.” Related Articles: Been Married For Years and Hit a Sexual Plateau? Consider These Tips It’s Possible! I Rekindled My Sex Life in My 30-Year Relationship The Ultimate List of Intimacy-Boosting Products for Couples External factors, such as eating habits and stress levels, all contribute to the ebbs and flows of your sex drive. Oriowo tells Black Love that these factors play into sexual response cycles, specifically William Masters and Virginia Johnson four-stage linear model. From data they collected, they found that the four stages of human sexual response are excitement, plateau, orgasm and resolution. In 1979, Helen Kaplan took it a step further, adding desire as the first stage.  Oriowo says that if people experience a successful cycle and a good resolution that will increase their desire and sex drive. However, when they have a poor experience, often influenced by those hidden external factors, it can contribute to the low sex drive. In agreement with Oriowo, licensed marriage and family therapist Rabiia Ali says that when it comes to sex, everything is connected.  “When one part of it is off, everything can be off,” Ali tells Black Love. “If you are experiencing stressful situations, you may not have the capacity to be able to even feel sexual or physical sexual feelings, and that definitely could impact your sex drive.” The status of your mental, physical and emotional health outside of the bedroom impacts the experience you may have within it. If you are experiencing a low sex drive, these five things may be secretly interfering with your bedroom experience.    Stress Courtesy of Canva.com Stress is prevalent in the Black community, with people reporting experiencing stress at a higher rate than their white counterparts. In today’s political and social climate, people are more stressed than ever.  “One of the biggest things that goes into a low self sex drive is how we're feeling,” Oriowo tells Black Love. “Now, people are experiencing more stress than they have ever experienced before. It makes sense because people are having less sex than they have ever had before.” Low Self-Esteem The way that you feel about yourself plays a major role in your performance in the bedroom. With society’s unattainable beauty standards, it’s easy to put pressure on yourself to look a certain way.  Sex requires you to be in your most vulnerable state with your partner. If you are not comfortable in your looks and your own skin, you can shy away from it. Low self-esteem and confidence may be the cause of your low sex drive.  Diet The foods that you eat and the amount of water you consume plays a pivotal role in your sexual performance. Alcohol, along with other drugs, could also negatively impact your sex drive.  “When clients are coming in and they're saying that they are not having strong orgasms, or they're not able to get erect, one of the first things I ask them about is their water consumption and their diets,” Oriowo says. “Eat what you normally eat, and add in foods that are high in antioxidants [and that] help with blood flow.” Courtesy of Unsplash.com Lack of Interest A good sexual experience combines an emotional connection with an intense physical attraction. If you have a lower sex drive with your partner, one reason could be that you are no longer interested in them.  When the connection that you are experiencing with your partner is diminishing or is lost, it can be difficult to maintain an active sex life.  Fatigue When you come home after a long day of work and complete all of your household chores, you may be exhausted. Without the proper amount of rest and relaxation, your body won’t be in the best position to perform in the bedroom.  Make sure to get between seven and nine hours of sleep a night. Adults who sleep less than 7 hours may have more health issues, including low sex drive.
